We don’t call them moisturisers because strictly speaking the water molecule is too big to pass through the dermis. The best thing you can do to keep the skin moisturised is prevent transdermal evaporation by creating an oil rich barrier. This is what your natural sebum is designed to do and why a babies skin is so soft and transluscent. Unfortunately sebum levels decrease with time and so we need to replace it with skin friendly plant based alternatives. Jojoba oil is said to be the closest at the molecular level to sebum and makes a great choice for skincare. Organic, cold pressed, viring plant oils are rich in essential acids which research shows are proportional to moisture retention in the dermis. Another fact, not widely known, is that the protein in skin needs to be oiled which is why our creams are water in oil immulsions meaning they have more oil than water. The protein in skin is kept in the best condition by emollients not water which will evaporate and leave the skin dryer than ever.
